Three Huskers Named to Big Ten Golfers to Watch List
Nebraska seniors Jace Guthmiller, Sean Song and Jackson Wendling were mentioned among the list of the top men's golfers in the Big Ten as the conference prepares to open its 2018-19 season.
Guthmiller, who begins his senior campaign with the Huskers, led the team as a junior with a 73.48 stroke average. Last season, he shot a career-low 65 in the second round at the 2017 Jackrabbit Invitational in Valentine, Neb. His score of 65 was one stroke off the school record set by Cornhusker great Brady Schnell in 2005-06. Guthmiller had three top-25 finishes in 2017-18 and tied for 12th at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Carefree, Ariz. in September of 2017. He is expected to be the team's top golfer once again in his final year as a Husker. The Yankton, S.D., native is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was named to the 2017 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
Song, who is also in his fourth season at Nebraska, came on strong in the final two months of 2017-18 after being a part-time contributor in the lineup earlier in his junior season. He tied for 45th at the Big Ten Championships in April after shooting a 223 (+13) over 54 holes. As a sophomore in 2016-17, Song earned a career-best finish at the Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. He tied for 28th after shooting a 54-hole score of 217 (+7). The senior from Omaha is a two-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll member and was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2017.
Wendling, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, was one of two golfers on the team to earn a spot in the lineup in all 10 of Nebraska's stroke play tournaments in 2017-18. His stroke average of 74.76 ranked second among the Huskers, as he went on to earn one top-25 finish last year. Originally from Effingham, Ill., Wendling shot a career-low 54-hole score of 215 last fall at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, Fla. (Oct. 23-24). He is a six-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll member and was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship team in 2017. As a freshman, he was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week on Sept. 9, 2015 after shooting a 36-hole score of 142 (E) at the Ballyneal Challenge in Holyoke, Colo.
Nebraska, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Mark Hankins and Associate Head Coach Judd Cornell, tees off its fall season at the Rod Myers/Duke Invitational next weekend in Durham, N.C. (Sept. 8-9).
