Huskers to Host Greeno/Dirksen Invitational

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska cross country team is set to host the 29th annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational at the Mahoney Golf Course this Saturday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s race and will be followed by the men’s race at 9:45 a.m. The meet is expected to conclude around 11 a.m. A $5 admission fee will be charged at the gate. The Greeno/Dirksen Invite has been held at Pioneers Park the last 25 seasons, but the Mahoney Golf Course will host the meet for the first time this season. The meet will help the Huskers prepare for the Big Ten Championships as the Mahoney Golf Course will be the home of the championships on Sunday, Oct. 28.

Mark Freyhof and Erika Freyhof were the top finishers for the Big Red at the Augustana Twilight. Mark Freyhof paced the men’s squad with a second-place finish, clocking a time of 21:26.40 in the 7K. Erika Freyhof led the women’s team and placed second with a personal best time of 17:18.76 in the 5K.

Last season, both teams finished as the runner-ups at the Greeno/Dirksen Invite. Mark Freyhof is the best returning Husker from the meet, finishing fifth in the 8K last season with a time of 25:50.9. Rachel Brush is the top returner for the women’s team as she placed ninth in the 6K, clocking a time of 22:22.8.

Hosts: The Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational is co-hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University and The University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  The meet is named after long time coaches Woody Greeno (Nebraska Wesleyan University) and Jay Dirksen (University of Nebraska)

Course: Mahoney Park Golf Course - 7900 Adams St, Lincoln, NE 68507
The Big Ten Cross Country Championship will be held on the Mahoney Park Course on October 28th, 2018.  This years’ Greeno/Dirksen meet will be held on the same Mahoney Park Course.  The meet will return to Pioneers Park in 2019.

Parking: Team parking will be in the Mahoney golf course clubhouse lot @ 76th & Adams.  Spectator parking will be in Mahoney Park.  Entrance to the park is @ 70th & Fremont street.

  Parking (Map) - All fans will park in Mahoney Park, entering the park at 70th & Fremont Street.  Team parking will be within the golf course parking lot.

Spectator Admission: Admission to the meet will be $5 for spectators.

Starting Times: Women - 9:00 AM (6000 Meters)  START TIMES MOVED AHEAD 1 HOUR DUE TO FORECASTED HEAT
                           Men - 9:45 AM (8000 Meters)

Entry Dead Line: All entries are due by Wednesday, September 12th @ 9 AM.

Timing: Chip timing will be provided by Heartland Timing.  
Packets: Packets can be picked up at the course after 8:00 AM the morning of the meet.

Numbers: All runners must wear their assigned number on the front of their uniforms.

Team Scoring: NCAA rules in effect.  No top 7 designation.   The meet will be scored in two divisions, University division (NCAA I) and College division (NCAA II, NCAA III, NAIA, JUCO)

Awards: Trophies will be awarded to the top finishing College team (NCAA II, NCAA III, NAIA and JUCO) and to the top finishing University team (NCAA I).  T-shirts will be awarded to the top 35 overall men and women.

Heat Contingency: If extreme heat/humidity is probable, the start times may be moved 30-60 minutes earlier.  Coaches will be informed on Friday if any changes are made.

Course Inspection:   Course will be available on Friday, September 14th after 4:00 pm.
Showers: Showers will be available at the Weary Center on the Nebraska Wesleyan campus @ 53rd and Huntington.  Enter the building on the west side.
Trainers: Nebraska Wesleyan and University of Nebraska athletic trainers will be available if needed.  They will be located behind the starting line area.
