Huskers Sweep Central Michigan
LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 4 Nebraska volleyball team began the Husker Invite with an efficient sweep of Central Michigan on Friday, 25-18, 25-15, 25-11, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The Huskers (7-1) won their seventh straight match behind nine kills each from Mikaela Foecke and Lauren Stivrins and seven kills from Jazz Sweet. Nebraska dominated at the service line with an 8-0 advantage in aces and five fewer errors than the Chippewas (13-8).
The Huskers out-hit Central Michigan, .347 to .150, including an impressive .750 hitting percentage in set three with 12 kills on 16 swings. NU had a 9-2 advantage in blocks and a 34-27 edge in kills.
Foecke, Sweet and Stivrins combined for 25 of the Huskers' 34 kills on .458 hitting. Nicklin Hames had 24 assists and seven digs with a pair of aces. Callie Schwarzenbach led all players with five blocks and chipped in four kills. Hayley Densberger served three of the Huskers' eight aces. She and Kenzie Maloney each had seven digs.
Central Michigan was led by Lyza Myers and Savannah Thompson, both with eight kills.
Set 1: Nebraska led 15-10 at the media timeout, thanks in part to five service errors by the Chippewas and three kills by Sweet. Back-to-back Foecke kills extended the lead to 20-14, and the Huskers took the first frame, 25-18. Foecke and Sweet combined for nine kills and no errors.
Set 2: NU jumped out to a 7-2 lead with two kills by Stivrins and a Maloney ace. Densberger served three aces during a 5-0 run that increased the lead to 21-9, and Nebraska finished off the 25-15 on an Anezka Szabo kill.
Set 3: A 4-0 spurt, keyed by back-to-back blocks by Schwarzenbach, put the Huskers ahead 9-5. Hames served consecutive aces, and Schwarzenbach and Sweet combined for another block to make it 13-6. The Huskers rolled to the 25-11 win, scoring 21 of the last 28 points.
Up Next: The Huskers host New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in their second match of the day. New Mexico was swept by Missouri State in the morning match.
