LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska cross country team co-hosted the 29th annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational along with Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday morning at the Mahoney Golf Course. The Mahoney Golf Course will also be the site of the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday, October 28.

“This meet was a good preview for the Big Ten Championships,” remarked Coach Harris. “We have some kinks to work out and we are going to do that here in the next month. Letting the teams see the course was the main thing. This is a really good course for the Big Ten Championships.”

The Husker men placed third in the 8K this morning with 71 points. George Kusche and Mark Freyhof both finished in the top five, placing second (24:41.4) and fourth (24:48.0), respectively. Freyhof’s time of 24:48.0 is a new personal best in the 8K. Bailey Timmons was the third Husker to cross the finish line and placed 13th with a time of 25:33.3. Myles Fleming also finished in the top 20, finishing 19th with a time of 25:40.1. Jack Slagle clocked a time of 26:13.5 and placed 36th.

“To have two guys finish in the top five at this meet was really good,” Harris said. “We have some talent up front and I am pleased we had four guys in the top 20. Our top five finishers were all freshmen and sophomores. It is a really good group to work with.”

The Nebraska women finished ninth in the 6K with 209 points. Erika Freyhof paced the women’s squad and finished 12th with a time of 21:51.9. Judi Jones also finished in the top 20 with a personal best time of 22:05.2 to place 18th. Elsa Forsberg ran a time of 23:13.6 and finished 51st. Grace Pagone and Nicole Colonna rounded out the top five finishers for the Big Red with times of 23:48.7 (78th) and 23:58.0 (84th), respectively.

“I am really pleased with Freyhof and Jones,” Harris said. “They both finished in the top 20 and they are front runners for us. We need that and we will need to call on them to be in the front of every race.”

Nebraska will now prepare for the Loyola Lakefront Invite on Saturday, September 29th. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. in Chicago, Illinois.
