Nebraskans Lead Huskers in Colorado
Haley Thiele and Kirsten Baete led the Nebraska women's golf team with first-round scores of 75 on Monday at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo.
Thiele, a junior from Wahoo, and Baete, a redshirt freshman from Beatrice, both put together three-over-par rounds on the par-72, 6,320-yard layout of the Fazio Course at the Red Sky Golf Club. The two Nebraska natives enter Tuesday's second round in a tie for 35th in a 93-player field in Colorado.
With Thiele and Baete leading the way, the Huskers managed a team total of 303 over the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. Nebraska sits in 11th place in the 18-team tournament field that features one team from 18 different conferences. Junior Kate Smith (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) added a four-over-par 76, while sophomore Noor Ahmed (Folsom, Calif.) rounded out Nebraska's team score with a five-over 77 on Monday.
True freshman Vanessa Bouvet, who led Nebraska with a tie for third at the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic last week, shot a 79 on Monday. Megan Whittaker from Omaha added an 80 in the first competitive round of her collegiate career. The true freshman from Omaha was playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup.
UCLA produced an 11-under-par round of 277 to take the early lead in the team standings. Bruins Clare Legaspi and Patty Tavatanakit both fired four-under-par rounds of 68 to share the individual lead with Campbell's Stacey White and Denver's Mary Weinstein. Seven other players sit in a tie for fifth place after opening-round scores of 70.
Campbell is in second place at 286, while Pepperdine enters Tuesday's second round 10 shots back of UCLA in third, just ahead of Denver (293) and TCU (294).
The three-day tournament continues with the second round on Tuesday, beginning with tee times at 11 a.m. (CT). Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
