Thiele Leads Big Red at Red Sky Golf Club

Haley Thiele led the Nebraska women's golf team with a three-over-par 75 in the second round at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Tuesday in Wolcott, Colo.

Thiele, a junior from Wahoo, Neb., produced her second straight 75 to close the tournament's first 36 holes at 150 in a tie for 32nd individually. She leads the Huskers in the 93-player field on the par-72, 6,320-yard layout of the Red Sky Golf Club's Fazio Course.

Sophomore Noor Ahmed (Folsom, Calif.) added a second-round 76 to end her day at 153 in a tie for 46th. Freshman Vanessa Bouvet (Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei) contributed a 79 for the second consecutive day, while junior Kate Smith (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) managed an 81 to round out Nebraska's 311 team score in the second round.

The Huskers enter Wednesday's final round in 13th place (303-311-614) in the 18-team Golfweek Conference Challenge field that features schools from 18 different conferences around the nation.

UCLA continued to control the team race with a four-under-par 284 on Tuesday to head into the final round at 561 (-15). Pepperdine produced a one-under-par team score of 287 for the second straight day to sit in second place at two-under 574. The Fighting Camels from Campbell are in third at 579, while Denver closed the second round in fourth at 588.

Through two rounds, a trio of UCLA golfers have recorded the tournament's top individual scores. Mariel Galdiano and Patty Tavatanakit head to the final round in a tie for first at 138 (-6), while teammate Clare Legaspi is tied for third at 141, just three shots off the pace. Pepperdine's Hira Naveed and East Tennessee State's Tereza Melecka are tied with Legaspi at 141.

Nebraska freshman Kirsten Baete (Beatrice, Neb.), who shot one of NU's best opening rounds with a 75 on Monday, settled for an 82 on Tuesday. Her 36-hole score of 157 has her in a tie for 65th, while fellow freshman Bouvet is tied for 72nd at 158. A third Husker freshman, Megan Whittaker (Omaha, Neb.) added her second straight round of 80 to move to the third round in a tie for 77th at 160 while playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup.
