NU Finishes Day One at William H. Tucker Invite

By NU Athletic Communications

Albuquerque, N.M. - The Nebraska men's golf team concluded the first day of competition at the William H. Tucker Invitational on Friday. The day began with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. local time. The 17 teams played two rounds consecutively and ended play around 7:45 p.m.

Nebraska’s team score after the first round was 297 (+9), which put NU in a tie for ninth place. Their second round resulted in a score of 300 (+12), which added up to a day one total of 597 (+21). The Huskers sit in 12th place out of 17 heading into the third round on Saturday.

UNLV finished day one in first place after shooting 563 (-13) over two rounds. BYU (-10) and Pepperdine (-8) round out the top three.

NU’s top performance of the day came from sophomore Daniel Pearson, who made his fall debut today.  After round one, the Longmont, Colo. native found himself tied for 20th in a field of 100 golfers after shooting a 72 (E). He ended up firing four birdies on the first 18 holes. His score of 72 (E) was one stroke short of tying his previous career-low of 71, which he shot at the Quail Valley Invitational last fall.

Pearson started strong in the second round and holed out for an eagle on the fifth hole, a par four. He went on to sink three birdies on the second 18 holes and ended the round with a 73 (+1). He finished the day tied for 32nd as he looks for his first career top 30 finish tomorrow.

Senior Jace Guthmiller finished round one tied for 20th with Daniel Pearson after shooting a 72 (E). The Yankton, S.D. native ended the round with four birdies. The second round was not as kind to him, however, as his three birdies were offset by three double bogeys. He finished the day tied for 60th.

Tanner Owen, a junior from Parkville, Mo., ended round one tied for 51st after shooting a 75 (+3). Owen ended his day by firing a 73 (+1) in round two, improving on his first round by two strokes. He finished the day tied for 54th. His seven birdies on the day were tied for a team-high.

Jackson Wendling, a senior from Effingham, Ill., shot a 77 (+5) in round one to tie for 68th. His second round score of 76 (+4) put him in a tie for 76th overall after day one. He fired three birdies in the second round, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18.

Along with Daniel Pearson, Sean Song also entered the lineup for the first time this season. The senior from Omaha finished the day with an 81 and 82 for 99th place after the first two rounds.

The Huskers will tee off tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. local time (9:00 a.m. in Neb.) in round three. Pairings will be based on the final results tonight and live stats will once again be posted online. Stay tuned to and follow along on Twitter @HuskersGolf for updates.
