NU Completes Two Rounds at Fighting Irish Classic

By NU Athletic Communications

South Bend, Ind. - The Nebraska men's golf team began day one of the two-day Fighting Irish Classic at 7:45 a.m. this morning and played 36 holes at Warren Golf Course, located just off the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The tournament finishes up with 18 holes tomorrow, with play beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Illinois, the reigning Big Ten champion, holds the lead after 36 holes. The Illini fired a 538 (-30) to take sole possession of first place. Georgia Southern (-25) and North Carolina (-18) round out the top three.

The Huskers currently sit in 13th place after shooting a 579 (+11) today. NU posted a 287 (+3) after 18 holes that earned them a tenth-place finish after round one. They followed that up with a 292 (+8) in the second 18 holes.

Patrick Clare, in his first appearance of the season, fired a 72 (+1) in round one and a 74 (+3) in round two. The sophomore sunk eight birdies on the day. Clare tied for second on the Huskers and 59th place overall with Jackson Wendling. Wendling shot a 71 (E) and a 75 (+4) in rounds one and two, respectively.

Tanner Owen continued his strong play this fall by finishing first among his teammates and tied for 19th overall after day one. He fired a 71 (E) in round one. While many guys saw their scores regress in round two, Owen went on to shoot a 69 (-2) to finish with a 36-hole score of 140 (-2). Through 36-holes, Owen sunk seven birdies and an eagle. If he shoots a 69 or lower in the third-round tomorrow, Owen will set a new career-low 54-hole record. His previous low is 210.

Jace Guthmiller ended day one in a tie for 67th place after shooting a 147 (+5). He sits just one stroke behind Patrick Clare and Jackson Wendling, so Guthmiller will have plenty of opportunities to make a move in the standings tomorrow.

After having arguably the best weekend of any Husker last weekend in Albuquerque, N.M., Daniel Pearson struggled from the get-go this morning at the Fighting Irish Classic. He shot a 77 (+6) in round one and a 75 (+4) in round two to finish up at 152 (+10) on the day.

Round three will begin at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning with pairings based off of the results today. Each Husker will begin on the back nine, started off by Daniel Pearson, who tees off at 8:50 a.m. Jace Guthmiller (9:00 a.m.), Patrick Clare (9:10 a.m.), Jackson Wendling (9:20 a.m.) and Tanner Owen (9:30 a.m.) follow suit.
