Huskers Head To Alaska To Face Nanooks, Buckeyes

By NU Athletic Communications

The No. 17 Nebraska rifle team will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska to face No. 12 Ohio State and No. 1 Alaska. NU will face Ohio State on Oct. 13 and Alaska on Oct. 14 in the first road matches of the 2018-19 season. Shooting action will begin at noon for both matches.

Last Time Out

The Huskers hosted defending champion Kentucky in their first match of the season on Oct. 6. Nebraska never recovered from an early deficit in smallbore and ultimately lost 4,635 – 4,686. Samantha Peterson led the Huskers in smallbore with a mark of 584. Kayla Gadeken was out front in air rifle after firing 590, her best since NU faced UTEP on Nov. 12, 2016. Mari Butler shot a career high in smallbore (564) and Elizabeth Ewert shot a career high (580) in air rifle.

Scouting Ohio State

Nebraska holds a 12-6 record against Ohio State dating back to 1999. The Buckeyes have emerged victorious in the last four meetings but the Huskers will look to reverse the trend. This will serve as Ohio State’s first match of the 2018-19 season after finishing seventh at the 2018 NCAA Championships in March. The shooters to watch will be juniors Jacob Buchanan and Rihann Travis. Both are returning All-Americans who have personal bests of at least 595 in air rifle.  The Buckeyes are coached by Ryan Tanoue, who enters his seventh season in 2018-19.

Scouting Alaska

The Huskers are 2-30 against the Nanooks dating back to the teams’ first meeting in 2000. Included in that record are two ties, resulting in a loss and the Huskers’ second win. This will serve as Alaska’s first match of the 2018-19 season after concluding 2017-18 with a sixth-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships. The Nanooks are coached by Layne Lewis.
