Huskers Wrap Up Gopher Invite

By NU Athletic Communications

Minneapolis -- Junior Alvaro Moreno Lozano and freshman Victor Moreno Lozano played nine matches over the weekend to wrap up their participation at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The Moreno brothers played six singles and three doubles contests against qualified opponents from Marquette, Notre Dame, Utah and Wisconsin. Victor Moreno earned the Huskers' sole tournament win in a hard-fought contest with Brett Meyers of Marquette, 6-2, 7-6.

Nebraska has 27 singles wins and 11 doubles wins on the fall season so far. In singles play, freshman Mason Meier has a 3-0 record while Victor Moreno is 8-6. Senior Toby Boyer has a 3-3 singles mark, trailed by sophomore Isaac Nortey (2-2) and freshman William Gleason (4-5). Boyer dominates doubles competition with an 6-2 mark while Nortey holds a 4-2 record.

The Huskers started off fall competition at a pair of different tournaments on Sept. 21-23. Victor Moreno and Nortey reached the doubles championship match while Meier tied for first place in the Singles B flight at the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa. NU also competed at the Ivy Plus Invitational, hosted by Princeton University, where Gleason earned a runner-up finish in the Jadwin Red bracket and Boyer/Gleason got third place in the Silver doubles draw.

After a couple of weeks, Boyer competed at the Texas Tamale Houston Cup, a USTA/ITF Pro Circuit event in Houston, Texas on Oct. 6. The Ham Lake, Minn., native fell short to No. 7 Tim Ruehl, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 in the singles qualifying round. Klousia, Moreno, and senior Jon Meyer represented the Huskers at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., on Oct. 5-7, earning a total of three singles wins and one doubles win.

Boyer and Klousia then had an impressive doubles run at the ITA Central Regionals, hosted by the University of Tulsa from Oct. 18-21. The Husker duo upset the tournament's No. 1 seed (Arkansas) in the round of 32 before knocking off pairs from Creighton and Tulsa to advance to the semifinals. Boyer/Klousia fell just short of a championship match after a tough 6-3, 6-4 loss to No. 9 Vinny Gillespie/Barny Thorold (Drake). Nebraska wrapped up the ITA Regionals with a total of 10 singles wins and four doubles wins. In singles play, Klousia and Victor Moreno reached the round of 32, while Boyer, junior Chris Dean and Gleason made it to the round of 64.

Last weekend, Dean and Nortey earned a runner-up finish in the doubles Flight B at the Big Ten Individual Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan on Oct. 26-28. The Husker pair beat opponents from Wisconsin and Indiana before losing the final match to Iowa.

The Huskers start their spring season in January on a date still to be announced.
