Huskers Travel to Jacksonville
The No. 8 Nebraska rifle team travels to Jacksonville, Ala. this weekend to participate in the Gamecock Open. JSU is hosting an open match in which anyone can compete, including shooters from other teams and junior shooters from across the country. Match action is set to begin at 8 a.m.
Last Time Out
The Huskers traveled to Akron, Ohio to face Akron and Morehead State on Nov. 3. The first day resulted in a second place finish for NU with an overall team score of 4,656. Akron grabbed first place with 4,660 and Morehead State came in third with 4,634. Emily Cheramie led the Huskers with 583 in smallbore. Freshman Elizabeth Lorentz paced the team with 590 in air rifle.
Big Red claimed a victory the following day with a win over Akron (4,666-4,636). A season-high team smallbore score (2,316) resulted in Nebraska’s highest aggregate score of the season. Samantha Peterson paced Nebraska with a mark of 584 in smallbore. Peterson and Elizabeth Lorentz led the field in air rifle with 590 each.
Nebraska currently holds a 10-8 record against JSU, dating back to 2000. The Huskers have emerged victorious in the last six meetings and will look to continue the trend. The Gamecocks are coming off of a 4,656-4,716 loss to Murray State on Nov. 3. Senior Mekenna Richardson led the team in both disciplines, recording a score of 585 in smallbore and 593 in air rifle. Richardson and junior David Sink are the shooters to watch. Head coach Ron Frost began his coaching tenure 12 years ago, highlighted by a five-year stretch of NCAA Championships appearances from 2011 to 2015.
