Huskers Golf Signs No. 1 NJCAA Recruit to NLI
Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska men's golf team officially welcomes top-ranked NJCAA transfer, Mark Foelbaek, to its 2019 recruiting class after receiving his National Letter of Intent on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Originally from Jeling, Denmark, Foelbaek talked about what made him want to join the Nebraska golf team next season.
“The goals that [Nebraska Head Golf] Coach Hankins has for this team and the direction of the program is the biggest reason I decided to sign with Nebraska,” Foelbaek said. “It’s going to be really exciting to play for a guy like him who is so motivated to make his team better and win. I believe he can help me become the best golfer and person I can be.”
Foelbaek is finishing up his sophomore season at Ranger College in Ranger, Texas before he becomes a Husker in the fall of 2019. An honor student with a 3.75 GPA at Ranger, Foelbaek achieved top five finishes in all four of his events this fall, posting an amazing 68.4 stroke average.
As well as he’s played this year, he thinks he can take his game to another level with all the resources at his fingertips at NU.
“Nebraska is a big time school,” he said. “It has all the resources and the facilities I could need to help me become a great golfer. With the indoor and outdoor facilities, I’m going to be able to practice every single day and work on my game constantly.”
His stellar play this season was highlighted by a six stroke victory over a top field at the High Country Shootout in Ruidoso, N.M. He shot a school record total of 193 (-23) over three rounds (65-63-65). He also helped lead Ranger to a team title at the New Mexico Military Bronco Invitational, where he finished tied for fourth after rounds of 68 and 70. His strong play continued at the Tyler JC Fall Invitational, where after an opening round of 73 (+1), he bounced back with a final round 64 (-8) to move up the leaderboard and finish third.
“Mark displays the type of attributes that we look for in a recruit,” Coach Hankins said. “He is a hard worker and has posted some really low scores. He’s is a leader on and off the golf course and he wants to take his game to the next level, while receiving an excellent education here at Nebraska. We are excited to have him next fall.”
The Denmark native also talked about a few of the goals he has when he gets to Nebraska.
“I hope to be a part of the best Nebraska golf team they’ve ever had,” Foelbaek said. “I want the team to compete for conference titles and possibly have a chance to go to nationals. I also want to be a leader on the team and a guy who can be depended on to play well every tournament.”
Foelbaek finished the fall season as the No. 1 ranked NJCAA player in the country, according to golfstat.com. He will have two years of eligibility remaining and is the third player signed in the Huskers class of 2019.
Coach Hankins wants us to be one of the best teams in the nation, and he has a plan for us to get there,” Foelbaek said. “How can you say no to that?”
