NU Starts Season at Rocky Mountain Open
The preseason No. 6 Nebraska men’s gymnastics team will open the 2019 season this Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo., at 7 p.m. CT. The Huskers claimed first place and three event titles at the Rocky Mountain Open last season, their first time winning the RMO since 2000.
Scouting the Competition
The Huskers compete against Oklahoma, Minnesota, Ohio State, Arizona State and Air Force. In 2018, Oklahoma claimed its third consecutive national title, while Minnesota placed second. In the Big Ten Coaches Poll, Minnesota is ranked No. 2 and Ohio State is ranked No. 5.
In 2018, Nebraska finished fifth at the NCAA Championships and return 12 letterwinners and two All-Americans (Anton Stephenson and Griffin Kehler) from that team. Stephenson claimed the 2018 Big Ten Vault Title for the second consecutive season and earned All-America honors on the event, after placing second at the NCAA Championship. Kehler tied for fifth on floor, helping the Huskers to their fifth place team finish. Junior Jake Bonnay is also expected to do big things for the Huskers this season after he and Stephenson were named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch prior to the start of the season. Last season, Bonnay competed on floor and high bar in every regular-season meet and competed seven times on vault. Bonnay claimed the silver medal (14.90) on vault at the 2018 Big Ten Championships and shared the silver medal on floor with fellow Husker Anton Stephenson.
