Huskers Top Roos, 6-1
Lincoln, Neb. -- In its season home opener and Sean Maymi's first home match as head coach, the Nebraska men's tennis team defeated the UMKC Kangaroos, 6-1, in a cold afternoon at the Dillon Tennis Center on Wednesday. The Huskers are now 3-3 on the season, and will travel to Dallas, Texas, to face No. 10 Baylor on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. CT.
In doubles competition, the senior duo of Toby Boyer and Jon Meyer maintained a lead through the whole match to beat Tom Kruse/Daniel Izadifar, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot. Freshman William Gleason and sophomore Isaac Nortey then knocked off Hunter Clark/Anil Patel, 6-3, to give NU the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Nortey started off singles play with a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Josh McDermott at the No. 6 position, while junior Chris Dean overcame Anil Patel at No. 5 also in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Gleason secured a Nebraska victory with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Hunter Clark at No. 4 to extend the Husker lead to 4-0.
Senior Toby Boyer improved to 4-1 in the spring after a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Diego Giraldo at the No. 5 spot, as junior Micah Klousia won a hard-fought match against Tom Kruse at No. 2, 6-1, 3-6, 12-10. Freshman Victor Moreno Lozano dropped a three-set thriller to Ben Stride at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 to finish off Nebraska's 6-1 win.
The Huskers improved to 10-0 all-time against the Roos, who have visited Lincoln every season since 2015.
