By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb., -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to Kansas State 4-1 in a non conference match Friday evening at the Dillon Tennis Center.

The match began with doubles competition, where the Huskers dropped sets at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, which gave the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.

At No. 3, Hayley Haakenstad and Jeannie Lozowski competed together for the first time this season and defeated the Kansas State pair of Karine-Marion Job and Ioana Gheorghita, 6-1.

The match then shifted to singles, where Kansas State continued its solid play.

The Wildcats claimed their second team point of the match at No. 4, as Kansas State’s Ines Mesquita defeated Husker freshman Jessica Aragon 0-6, 2-6.

Wildcat freshman Karine-Marion Job defeated Husker junior Jeannie Lozowski at the No. 5 spot by a score of 6-1, 6-4 to give Kansas State a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats scored the decisive fourth team point at No. 1, where Husker senior Vasanti Shinde battled hard, but ultimately fell to Margot Decker 2-6, 3-6.

A bright spot for the Huskers was the play of Claire Reifeis, who competed at No. 2 and remained undefeated in spring competition after a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kansas State’s Maria Linares.

Two matches were still being played when Kansas State claimed victory.

Marina Cozac and Anna Turco were all knotted up at one in the second set at No. 3 singles when the match ended. This followed a back-and-forth first set which was claimed by the Wildcat sophomore in tiebreaking fashion, 7-6 (6-1).

Likewise, Hayley Haakenstad and Ioana Gheorghita were battling in the second set at No. 6 singles when play concluded, with Gheorghita up 3-1 following Haakenstad’s first set victory, 7-6 (6-1).

The Huskers return to action Sunday, when they host the University of Missouri-Kansas City and South Dakota at the Dillon Tennis Center. Those matches will take place at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT, respectively.
