Huskers Go 2-0 in Saturday Doubleheader

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team went 2-0 against Wyoming and Drake today in a Saturday doubleheader at the Dillon Tennis Center. NU defeated Wyoming 5-0 in the morning matchup and outlasted Drake 4-0 in the evening.

 

The Huskers started out the morning strong by taking two out of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point over the Cowgirls. At No. 2 doubles, Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon efficiently disposed of Mihaela Kaftanova/Ida Krause in a 6-1 win. The pair are now 4-1 together since they started playing with one another last week.

 

The Huskers took four of the six singles matches on Saturday morning, with two of them (No. 1 and No. 3), going unfinished.

 

Junior Hayley Haakenstad started the Big Red off win an efficient, 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot in the lineup. Fellow junior Jeannie Lozowski wasn’t far behind her as she defeated Wyoming’s Ana Fernandez, 6-2, 6-0.

 

Jessica Aragon earned the match clinching victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. NU senior Vasanti Shindecontinued her strong week with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tessa van Der Ploeg to put the Huskers up 5-0.

 

Both Claire Reifeis and Marina Cozac did not finish their matches, but each won their first set and were leading in the second.

 

In the second match of the day, the Huskers defeated Drake, 4-0. Nebraska kicked off the match with three doubles victories, giving the team the 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.

 

At No. 3, Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad got out to a quick start, knocking off Megan Webb and Kelsey Neville, 6-2. Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac followed with a 6-4 win at No.1 and Jessica Aragon andClaire Reifeis closed out their match at No. 2 coming away with a 6-3 victory.

 

In singles, Claire Reifeis took care of business at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Carmen Palumbo. 

Shortly after, Jeannie Lozowski completed her dominant win over Sophia Haleas 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. With a 3-0 lead in the match, Jessica Aragon closed things out for the night with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Kenya Williams.
