Brown Earns Spot on Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll
Nebraska's Leigha Brown claimed a spot on the Big Ten Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll following her 30-point performance in Sunday's win over Purdue at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Brown, a 6-1 freshman from Auburn, Ind., put up the first 30-point game by a Husker in more than two seasons by erupting for 30 points on 8-of-14 shooting in the 67-61 win over the Boilermakers. She scored 22 of her career-high 30 points in the second half, to help the Huskers rally from a 33-23 third-quarter deficit. Brown knocked down career bests with 4-of-6 threes and 10-of-12 free throws to help Nebraska complete a season series sweep of Purdue.
Brown's 13 points in the fourth quarter matched Purdue's team output in the final period, and helped Nebraska outscore the Boilers 25-13 down the stretch. Her 30-point effort came off the bench for the Big Red in just 25 minutes. She added four rebounds and two steals on the day. Earlier in the week, she scored six points while adding three rebounds and an assist in 12 minutes off the bench at Michigan. Brown entered Sunday's game averaging 9.3 points per contest on the season and increased her season scoring average by nearly a full point to 10.2 points per game to take over Nebraska's season scoring lead.
She is also averaging a team-best 11.5 points per game in conference play. For the week, Brown averaged 18.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 steal while hitting 10-of-20 shots (.500), including 5-of-9 three-pointers (.556). She also hit 11-of-14 free throws. She scored 36 points in 37 minutes of playing time during the week.
Iowa's Megan Gustafson was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, while Michigan's Naz Hillmon earned Freshman-of-the-Week honors. Hillmon and Brown were also joined on the three-person honor roll by Minnesota senior guard Kenisha Bell.
Brown, who was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Jan. 7, is the first Husker to earn a weekly honor roll spot this season. Fellow freshman Sam Haiby was also the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week (Feb. 4).
Brown and the Huskers will travel to No. 7 Maryland on Thursday. Tip-off between the Huskers and the Terrapins in College Park is set for 7 p.m. (CT) with live television coverage by BTN.
