Virga Earns Appearance At NCAA Championships

Senior Hannah Virga earned the chance to individually compete for a national title in the air rifle discipline at the 2019 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Rifle Championships. The announcement was made at the 2019 NCAA Championships Selection Show at 4 p.m. CT on

Virga, the only Husker who will appear at the championships, concluded the regular season with an average air rifle score of 585.11. Her season-high score was 593, fired at Nebraska’s most recent match against Murray State. Virga is currently tied for the record for highest air rifle score in Nebraska history, having fired a score of 597 out of a possible 600 against Army in 2015. The Chandler, Ariz. native assembled a career average of 584.54 in air rifle over the last four years.

H. Virga is one of four athletes nationwide to qualify individually for the NCAA Championships in the air rifle discipline. She is joined by Rosemary Kramer (Georgia Southern), Alec Patajo (Nevada) and Alexa Potts (Morehead State).  Individual qualifiers in the smallbore discipline include: Brandon Bryer (Morehead State), Levi Clark (Memphis), Andre Gross (Akron) and Mitchell Van Patten (Nevada). Air Force, Alaska-Fairbanks, Army West Point, Kentucky, Murray State, Navy, TCU and West Virginia all qualified for the championships as teams and will compete with their top five athletes.

West Virginia will host the NCAA Championships at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W. Va. Smallbore is set to begin at 7 a.m. on Friday, Mar. 8, with air rifle occurring at the same time on Mar. 9.
