Huskers Surge to Lead at Westbrook Invite

Peoria, Arizona - A career round by Kirsten Baete and outstanding rounds by Kate Smith and Haley Thiele powered the Nebraska women's golf team to its best round of the 2018-19 season and the top of the team standings after the first day of the Westbrook Spring Invitational.

Baete, a redshirt freshman from Beatrice, Nebraska, scorched the 6,252-yard, par-72 layout of the Vistas Course at the Westbrook Golf Club for a six-under-par 66 in the second round. Baete's career round followed an opening-round 72 to put her in a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard with Smith at 138 through 36 holes. Baete's second round included five birdies on the back nine to go along with a pair of birdies and just one bogey on the front.

Smith, a junior from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, led the Huskers in Sunday's opening round with a two-under-par 70, before adding an impressive four-under-par 68 in the second round. Smith's second round included five birdies and one bogey on the front nine and nine pars on the back.

Nebraska's second-round 276, which marked a season-best for the Big Red, was bolstered by a season-best four-under-par 68 from Thiele, The junior from Wahoo, Nebraska, notched five birdies during the round and just one bogey. Thiele's second round followed an even-par 72 in the first round to put her in a tie for ninth heading into Monday morning's final round.

Nebraska's second-round, 12-under-par 276 came on the heels of a one-under-par 287 in Sunday's first round. Freshman Vanessa Bouvet rounded out NU's opening-round team score with a one-over 73. Bouvet (Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei) closed the day at five over (73-76-149) through two rounds in a tie for 63rd.

Sophomore Noor Ahmed (Folsom, California) completed Nebraska's second-round team score with a two-over-par 74. Ahmed closed her day at seven over (77-74-151) in a tie for 75th in the 93-player field.

The 276 team total for the Huskers in the second round was nine strokes better than their previous season best of 285, which came in the final round of the GolfWeek Conference Challenge on Sept. 26. 

Freshman Megan Whittaker (Elkhorn, Nebraska) tied with Ahmed in 75th with identical rounds of 77 and 74 while playing as an individual outside Nebraska's lineup.

Ohio State's Aneka Seumanutafa owns a one-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard through two rounds with a seven-under-par 137 (69-68).

As a team, the Huskers head into the final round at 563 (287-276) with a seven-stroke lead over second-place Mississippi State (286-284-570). Oklahoma is in third at 571 (283-288), while Oregon State, Michigan and Denver sit in a tie for fourth at 573.

The 16-team field at the Westbrook Spring Invitational hosted by Wisconsin features seven Big Ten Conference teams and 14 teams overall ranked among the top 100 teams in the nation, including five top-50 programs in the current GolfStat rankings.
