By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team dropped a back-and-forth battle to the Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday afternoon, 4-3. The Huskers took the doubles point and earned wins in two of the six singles matches. NU led 3-2 before ISU came from behind to take the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches to clinch the victory. The final two matches each went to three sets.

Doubles:

Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac moved to 8-4 in doubles play together this season with a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot. Trailing 2-1, the two seniors took five straight games to win the match.

Hayley Haakenstad and Jeannie Lozowski clinched the doubles point for NU at No. 3 with a 6-3 victory, their third of the year together. Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon were up 5-3 at No. 2, but did not finish their match.

Singles:

In singles action, Iowa State took a 2-1 lead in the team score with victories at No. 1 and No. 5. ISU’s Maty Cancini defeated Vasanti Shinde, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and Hayley Haakenstad fell to Annabella Bonnadonna, 2-6, 1-6 at No. 5.

Indianapolis, Ind., native Claire Reifeis quickly tied the dual meet for the Huskers with an impressive performance at No. 2, defeating ISU’s Ekaterina Grib, 6-2, 6-2 to earn her team-best 11th singles win of the year.

A native of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Jeannie Lozowksi earned a hard-fought, 7-5, 7-5 win over Regina Espindola at the No. 3 singles spot. Her victory put her team back up by the score of 3-2. Lozowski has now won five of her last seven decisions, playing out of the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 spots in the lineup.

Freshman Jessica Aragon played out of the No. 6 spot today for the first time this season. After falling in the first set, 5-7, she responded with a 6-3 set two victory to force a third set. In a neck-and-neck battle in set three, she eventually fell to Margarita Timakova, 4-6.

With the team score tied at three, ISU’s Ekaterina Repina outlasted Marina Cozac, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 to clinch the 4-3 win for the Cyclones.

Following today’s loss, the Huskers finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 8-8 record. NU won’t be back in action until Big Ten play begins on March 16, when the team travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the defending Big Ten champion Michigan Wolverines.
