Stephenson Earns NCAA Gymnast of the Week
On Tuesday, Anton Stephenson claimed NCAA Gymnast of the Week, becoming just the third Husker to earn the award following in the footsteps of his brother, Husker alum and All-American, Chris Stephenson. Stephenson, a senior on the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team, adds this award to the Big Ten Gymnast-of-the-Week honor that he earned on Monday.
The Fishers, Ind., native was rewarded by both the conference and the NCAA for his stellar performance against the top-ranked Michigan Wolverines on March 23. Stephenson claimed individual titles on vault (15.05), floor (14.40), parallel bars (14.75) and claimed the all-around title (84.40) against Michigan. On the other events, the senior finished with scores of 13.65 (pommel horse), 13.50 (still rings) and 13.05 (high bar). Stephenson claimed second place on pommel horse, eighth place on still rings and fifth place on high bar.
Stephenson led the Huskers to a first place finish over Michigan, which included season high scores on vault (72.60), parallel bars (69.70) and still rings (68.00). The victory gave NU its second conference win of the season.
Huskers return to competition in Iowa City, Iowa for the Big Ten Championships on April 5 and 6. Competition is set for 7 p.m. each day. It will be televised on BTN and will also be available on BTN2GO and the BTN2Go mobile app.
Minnesota’s David Pochinka took home NCAA Rookie-of-the-Week and B1G Ten Freshman-of-the-Week, after claiming the event title on parallel bars with a career-high 14.50 against Penn State and Iowa.
