Palo Alto, Calif., - The Nebraska men's golf team sits in a tie for 14th place after day one at “The Goodwin,” the three-day, 27-team tournament hosted by Stanford University. The Huskers shot 293 (+13) on day one, led by junior Tanner Owen’s standout performance, a one-under-par 69. Owen leads all Huskers and is tied for seventh place out of the 132 players competing in the field.

 

Washington leads the team standings after the first round as the Huskies shot a 278 (-2) as a team. Stanford (-1) is in second place while USC and California (+6) are tied for third.

 

Husker seniors Jace Guthmiller and Jay Cottam are tied for 52nd overall after each firing a 74 (+4) in the first round. Fellow senior Jackson Wendling, coming off of his first top-20 finish of the season, is tied for 91st after shooting a 76 (+6). Perth, Australia, native Cameron Jones rounds out the group in a tie for 113th as he carded a 78 (+8).

 

NU fired eight birdies as a team today. Jay Cottam led the team with three while Jace Guthmiller and Tanner Owen carded two apiece. In addition to his two birdies, Owen parred 15 holes and tallied just one bogey on the day.

 

Coach Hankins’ group will be back in action for round two tomorrow. Cameron Jones will be the first Husker to tee-off at 2:55 p.m. CT. Tanner Owen will be the last Husker to tee-off as he starts his second round at 3:39 p.m. CT.
