Huskers Fall to Wildcats, 5-2
Evanston, Ill. -- The Nebraska men's tennis team (9-11, 1-4 Big Ten) fell short to the Northwestern Wildcats (12-9, 3-2 Big Ten), 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill.
Boyer earned his 14th win of the spring season in a three-set contest against Dominik Stary, 6-0, 4-6, 7-6. Victor Moreno snapped a two-match losing streak with his straight-sets upset over Simen Bratholm, 6-2, 7-6. Boyer now racks up a 14-3 record, while Moreno holds a 10-8 mark -- both lead the team in singles wins this season.
Ben Vandixhorn/Simen Bratholm quickly knocked off senior Jon Meyer and sophomore Isaac Nortey at No. 3, 6-1, before Antonioni Fasano/Trice Pickens beat junior Micah Klousia and Moreno, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point for Northwestern.
Junior Chris Dean and freshman William Gleason dropped a pair of matches at No. 6 and No. 4, respectively, as Northwestern extended their lead to 3-0. Dean fell to Chris Seidman, 6-0, 6-2, while Gleason lost to Chris Ephron, 6-0, 6-3.
Victor Moreno earned NU's first point of the match, but Nortey fell short to Pickens, 6-2, 7-6, at the No. 5 position to clinch the match for the Wildcats at 4-1.
Klousia then fell in straight sets to Fasano, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot, before Boyer closed it out with his three-set win to end the match at 5-2.
The Huskers will return home this weekend to host the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday, April 5 at 6 p.m. CT before taking on the No. 37 Penn State Nittany Lions on Sunday, April 7 at Noon CT. Both matches will be played at the Dillon Tennis Center -- weather permitting, the Huskers could play outside at home for the first time this season.
