Brandt Called Up to USA U-23 National Team Training Camp
Nebraska midfielder Meg Brandt has been invited to La Manga, Spain, to take part in the U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team training camp from April 2-10. Head Coach Mark Carr will be evaluating 20 of the top collegiate players in the nation as Carr and the U.S. take on Sweden, France and Italy.
A native of Ankeny, Iowa, Brandt was a third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2017 and started all 21 games in 2018 for Nebraska, ranked third on the team in goals (3), third in assists (3), fourth in points (9), second in shots (36) and second in shots on goal (16). She earned Big Ten All-Tournament honors after playing the full 200 minutes in NU's two games during the tournament. Brandt scored her first goal of the season on Aug. 26 when she found the back of the net for the game winner against Oregon State. She added an assist in Nebraska's road win over No. 13 NC State on Sept. 9.
Brandt produced a three-point effort against Indiana on Sept. 20, scoring a goal in the 53rd minute before assisting Faith Carter's game winner in the 91st minute. On Sept. 23, Brandt recorded an assist in NU's 1-0 win over Purdue. In the regular-season finale against Michigan State on Oct. 24, Brandt scored a goal in the 12th minute to help Nebraska earn a tie for fifth in the Big Ten and a spot in the conference tournament.
The U.S. Under-23 squad is one-of-five youth national teams (also U-20, U-18, U-17 and U-15). Their progress is monitored by U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Jill Ellis to evaluate upcoming college-aged players who can contribute to her team in the coming years.
Brandt and the U-23 Women’s National Team will take on Sweden on April 5, France on April 7 and Italy on April 9 as a part of the La Manga Tournament in La Manga, Spain. England and Norway will also participate in the six-country friendly competition, where every team will play three matches.
