Huskers Fall to Rutgers on Senior Day, 4-3

Lincoln, Neb.— The Nebraska women’s tennis team falls to 9-15 on the season (1-7 B1G) after losing to the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers at the Dillon Tennis Center in the final home match of the season. Today, NU celebrated three Husker seniors, Vasanti Shinde, Elizabeth Gould, and Marina Cozac, prior to the match.  


The Scarlet Knights stole the doubles point and edged out the Huskers in three singles matches to claim the 4-3 win. 



Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad got off to a slow start at No. 3 doubles and were unable to recover, dropping their match to Tess Fisher and Sydney Kaplan of Rutgers, 6-3.

Shortly after, Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac fell to Maya Jacobs and Kat Muzik at the No. 1 position, 6-3.


Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon trailed 3-5 to Kristiana Zahare and Jaci Cochrane of Rutgers in their match at No. 2 doubles. 



In singles action, Jeannie Lozowski dropped her match at No. 3 to Kat Muzik. Lozowski fell 6-3 in the first set and dropped the second set 6-0.


Trailing 2-0 in the match, Hayley Haakenstad answered back for the Huskers. The junior from Chanhassen, Minn., took control of her match at No. 6 singles, claiming the 6-2, 6-2 win over Isabelle Da Silva. With that win, Haakenstad moves to 10-5 playing out of the No. 6 spot and 12-8 overall. 


Claire Reifeis tied up the match 2-2 with her victory of Maya Jacobs at No. 1 singles. Reifeis and Jacobs battled back-and-forth in the first set, but it would be Reifeis on top, taking the match 6-4, 6-0 in straight sets. 


Jessica Aragon added on to the Huskers singles victories with an impressive three-set triumph over Jaci Cochrane. After falling in the opening set 3-6, Aragon answered back in the final two sets, winning 6-3, 6-1.


The Huskers took a 3-2 lead in the match, but the Scarlet Knights answered back. At No. 2 singles, Tess Fisher outlasted Vasanti Shinde, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 and tied up the match at 3-3.


Marina Cozac gave it her all at No. 4 singles but was unable to defeat Syndey Kaplan. The senior from Chicago, Ill., claimed the first set in a tiebreaker but was unable to pick up the match win, falling 7-6, 4-6, 5-7.

The Huskers hit the road for the remainder of the season. On Saturday, April 13th, NU heads to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes with match play from Iowa City beginning at Noon CT.
