Martin Named Nebraska Rifle Coach
Former Husker national champion Rachel Martin has been named the head rifle coach at the University of Nebraska, Athletic Director Bill Moos announced on Tuesday, April 9. Martin is sixth head coach to lead the Husker rifle program.
Martin, a 2017 Nebraska graduate, returns to her alma mater after spending the past season as an assistant coach at Army West Point. She also remains a competitive shooter as a seven-time national champion and current member of the USA Shooting team.
“As a former Husker, it is a great privilege to be returning to the University of Nebraska as the Head Rifle Coach,” Martin said. “It has always been my belief that the greatest of athletes not only excel in their sport, but dedicate their lives to positively impacting the world around them. I can say from experience that the University of Nebraska invests in the development of such individuals, and I am honored to be a part of that."
Moos said Martin’s competitive experience and familiarity with Nebraska make her a great fit to lead the program that helped her reach the pinnacle of her sport as the 2015 NCAA smallbore champion.
“I am pleased to welcome Rachel back to Nebraska,” Moos said. “Rachel was a terrific student-athlete who was a great competitor and ambassador for the University of Nebraska. She understands and embraces the Nebraska culture. As a recent student-athlete herself, she also has the ability to relate to her shooters. Rachel is a great fit to lead the Nebraska rifle program.”
In her lone season at Army, Martin helped the Black Knights to a sixth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championship, the program’s first NCAA Championship appearance in four seasons. Individually, Martin helped Payne Nunn post the highest air rifle score in program history en route to second-team All-America honors.
Martin owns the highest air rifle score in Nebraska history, as she was a decorated competitor for the Huskers from 2014 to 2017. She was an All-America shooter in both disciplines – smallbore and air rifle – and was the 2015 national champion in smallbore. Martin competed in both disciplines at the NCAA Championship all four years of her career, posting a top-10 finish in both smallbore and air rifle. Her individual success helped Nebraska to four consecutive top-eight team finishes at the national meet, including a pair of top-five finishes.
Martin replaced Ashley MacAllister, who led the Husker rifle program for the past five seasons.
MacAllister coached Nebraska for her final season in 2018-19, staying in Lincoln after her husband, Tim, was hired in late August as the Chief of Staff for the Texas Tech men’s basketball program. MacAllister, who led Nebraska to four NCAA Championship appearances in her five seasons, leaves Lincoln to join her husband in Lubbock, Texas. The couple has one son.
