Iowa City, Iowa., - The Nebraska men's golf team sits in 13th place after day one of the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa. NU fired a 304 (+20) in round one before coming back to shoot a 278 (-4) in round two.

 

The Iowa Hawkeyes, the tournament’s host, sits in first place after the first two rounds. They posted a team score of 539 (-29) through 36 holes. Illinois (-26), UMKC (-9), Kansas (-8) and Kansas State (-8) round out the top five.

 

Tanner Owen, Jackson Wendling and Mitch Klooz are all tied for 48th overall in the 74-golfer field. Each carded a 36-hole score of 146 (+4). Tanner Owen had the top round of the day for the Huskers after firing a 68 (-3) in the second round to work himself back into the top 50.

 

Owen birdied five times in the afternoon session, responding well from a tough first round that saw him card two double bogeys and a triple bogey on his way to a score of 78 (+7) during the first 18 holes.

 

Jackson Wendling played a much better second round as well, carding a 70 (-1) that was highlighted by two birdies and his first eagle of the season, which came on the sixth hole.

 

Graduate transfer Jay Cottam is tied for 56th after day one in Iowa City after posting rounds of 78-69 to finish at 147 (+5). Cottam was the third Husker to finish under par in round two, as his score of 69 (-2) saw him sink five birdies, including three on the back nine.

 

Senior Jace Guthmiller rounded out the Husker lineup by finishing tied for 59th after shooting 75-73 over 36 holes to finish at 148 (+6) for the day. Guthmiller sunk four birdies on the back nine in round two to finish the day on a positive note.

 

The Huskers will look to make a move in the team standings during tomorrow morning’s round three, which begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
