NU Drops Tight Match at No. 42 Wisconsin

Madison Wis.,-- The Nebraska women's tennis team competed in their final match of the season at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc. After taking the doubles point with consecutive wins at No. 2 and No. 1, the Huskers fell just short in singles competition, suffering a 4-3 match loss.


The Huskers fall to 10-17 and 2-9 in the Big Ten while the Badgers improve to 17-4 overall and 9-2 in the Big Ten. Following today's loss, Nebraska will not compete in the Big Ten Tennis Tournament at the Dillon Tennis Center next weekend. 



Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad went back and forth with Wisconsin's MaryAnn Rompf and Ava Markham at the start of the contest but were unable to pick up the win, falling 2-6.


The No. 1 and No. 2 NU doubles team got off to a hot start on the road. Claire Reifeis and Jessica Aragon jumped out to a 3-1 lead and never looked back, defeating Christina Zordani and Sara Castellano of Wisconsin, 6-3. Shortly after, the senior duo of Vasanti Shinde and Marina Cozac picked up a 6-3 win over Lexi Keberle and Anna Makarova.


With a 1-0 advantage over Wisconsin entering singles competition, the Huskers looked to close out the match. 



The Badgers tied up the match at 1-1 when Jeannie Lozowski fell to Anna Makarova of Wisconsin 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Shortly after, senior Vasanti Shinde broke the tie for the Big Red with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Wisconsin's Lexi Keberle. 


Jessica Aragon suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss to MaryAnn Rompf at No. 5 singles locking the match score up at 2-2. 


The Badgers earned a 3-2 lead with a win at No. 4 singles. Marina Cozac fell to UW's Ava Markham. Claire Reifies tied it back up at 3-3 with her team-best 19th win of the season featuring a defeat over Sara Castellano at No. 1 singles 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Reifeis closes out her singles season winning eight of nine matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. 


Everything came down to the result at No. 6 singles. After taking the first set, 6-4, Haakenstad dropped the second 3-6. In a back and forth deciding set, the junior from Chanhassen, Minn., was unable to put away the win, falling to Christina Zordani 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
