Philadelphia, Pa. - The Nebraska men's golf team is tied for ninth place out of 14 teams after the first round at the 2019 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships. Redshirt junior Mitch Klooz had the best day of all Huskers, shooting a two-over-par 72 to finish tied for 15th overall.

 

Purdue sits in first place through 18 holes after posting a team score of 282 (+2). Illinois (+7) and Minnesota (+7) are tied for second place while Michigan State and Rutgers are knotted at +11 to round out the top five.

 

NU’s Tanner Owen, who came into the tournament as the No. 356-ranked golfer in the country, carded a 73 (+3) in the first round. The Parkville, Mo., native is tied for 24th after day one as he strives to put himself in position for a potential appearance at the NCAA Regionals.

 

Seniors Jay Cottam and Jace Guthmiller are tied for 36th after shooting 75’s (+5) while Jackson Wendling (+6) is tied for 47th.

 

As a team, NU tallied 10 birdies on the day, led by Jace Guthmiller, who had three. Tanner Owen, Jackson Wendling and Mitch Klooz each carded two birdies while Jay Cottam finished with one.

 

The Huskers will be back in action tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. CT for round two.
