Three Huskers Freshmen Place at Marines U.S. Open
Las Vegas, Nev. – One former Husker and three current Huskers placed in the top four of their weight class at the Marines U.S. Open this weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. James Green, a four-time All-American at NU and a two-time world medalist, fell in the Senior Men’s Freestyle Championship match to former Northwestern grappler Ryan Deakin. Green led 6-5 with 10 seconds left before Deakin tacked on a late takedown to win the bout.
With the win, Deakin earns an automatic bid to Final X – Lincoln in June for a chance to compete for a spot on the World team. Green will have to battle his way through the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Raleigh, N.C., next month for a chance to compete at Final X – Lincoln.
UWW Junior Men’s Freestyle:
Three Huskers true freshmen placed in the top four of their weight class in the UWW Junior Men’s Freestyle competition this weekend. Jevon Parrish, who competed in eight duals and the Big Ten Championships this year as a freshman, took third place at 61 kg with an 8-1 record.
Parrish lost his first match in the Round of 64 before coming back to win eight straight bouts to capture third place. Peyton Robb won his first three matches at 70 kg before falling in the quarterfinals, 2-0, to the No. 1 seed. Robb, who came in as the No. 8 seed, went on to dominate the rest of his competition, going 4-0 in the consolation bracket, outscoring his opponents 36-2 on his way to a third-place finish.
Temperance, Mich., native Austin Emerson (125 kg) won his first two bouts before losing in the quarterfinals. He went on to win his next three in the consolation bracket before falling in the third-place match, 4-2, to finish fourth.
