Huskers Off to Strong Start at State Amateur

By NU Athletic Communications

Nebraska senior-to-be Haley Thiele took a three-stroke lead at the end of the opening day of the 45th Nebraska Women's Amateur Championship at York Country Club on Wednesday.

Thiele, the 2017 state women's amateur champ from Wahoo, knocked in five birdies to close her round at 72 (+2) on a day that included severe weather, heavy rains and difficult scoring conditions.

Thiele came through the challenging round on top, while Husker teammate Megan Whittaker from Elkhorn was three shots back in second place at 75 (+5). Whittaker, a 2019-20 Husker sophomore who won the 2018 Nebraska Girls' Match Play Championship last year at the York Country Club, held the lead for portions of the first round.

Fellow Husker sophomore-to-be Kirsten Baete from Beatrice joined Whittaker and Thiele in the top five after the opening 18 holes in York. Baete managed a 79 (+9) to tie for fourth. Baete won the Nebraska Girls' Amateur Championship in 2016. Hannah Thiele, a 2019-20 Husker junior and younger sister of Haley, is tied for eighth in the field after settling for an 82 (+11) in the first round.

Second-round action continues on Thursday in York with the final round to conclude on Friday.
