Returning 133-pound starter C.J. Napier posted a winning record (16-15) in his first season at the Division I ranks. The sophomore gained valuable experience and learned lessons that will benefit him as he aims for further success at Nebraska.
Big 12 Championships
Napier was not able to pick up a victory at the Big 12 Championships, but he did not end his season without a fight. In his first-round match with Nathan McCormick of Missouri, Napier dropped a 3-1 overtime decision, while he was eliminated in another tough battle in a 4-2 loss to No. 3 Kendric Maple of Oklahoma.
Napier produced a solid 16-13 regular season as Nebraska's 133-pound starter. The Columbus, Kan., native suffered a technical fall defeat to No. 10 Tyler Graff of Wisconsin to begin the season. He rebounded to win his next six matches in a row, including five at the Kaufman-Brand Open to claim the 133-pound Amateur Division title. Napier continued his success at the Las Vegas Invitational by going 4-2, including his first of two pins in his match against Cody Cole of Western State. The other fall occurred the following week against Tyler Johnson of South Dakota State.
After an 11-2 major decision win over Scott Norris of North Carolina State, Napier saw his winning slow down in mid-January. He rebounded with back-to-back wins over Nathan McCormick of Missouri and Casey Cruz of Northern Colorado on Jan. 29-31 for his final victories of the season.
Included in his 16-13 regular season was a 7-11 mark in duals. He also had two pins and four major decisions.
Napier claimed three straight Class 4A state titles at Columbus (Kan.) High School after he finished third as a freshman. Napier ended his career with a 143-9 career record and went on to win a senior national championship.
Napier was also a three-time All-American at the Cadet/Junior National Championships in Fargo, N.D., highlighted by the cadet freestyle title in 2006 at 135 pounds.
He was a member of the National Honor Society.
