Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)

The Voice of Nebraska Student-Athletes

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a recognized student organization at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln consisting of student-athlete leadership from each intercollegiate team. SAAC meets bi-weekly throughout the academic year serving as the voice for all 550 Husker student-athletes. SAAC provides valuable student-athlete perspective to the Athletic Director, Big 12 Conference and NCAA. SAAC excels in community service and has been instrumental in supporting area food drives, book drives and other philanthropies statewide. Keith Zimmer, Associate Athletic Director for Life Skills serves as the SAAC Advisor.

Our Mission
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee shall advise the academic/athletic staff in regards to services offered and quality of those services. The Committee shall assist in the development and implementation of programs that motivate student-athletes to strive for and be recognized for academic excellence and commitment.

The voting members of SAAC shall establish and maintain open channels of communication with their teammates and all student-athletes in order to appropriately express any issues of concern relevant to student-athletes.

The opinion of the Committee will be requested on various issues and topics as initiated by the Academic Staff, Compliance Coordinator, Associate/Assistant Athletic Directors, Athletic Director, Chancellor, NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative and Senior Women's Administrator. More specifically, this might include, however is not limited to topics such as student-athlete welfare, exit interviews, athletic awards and NCAA/Big 12 Legislation.

For the first time in the 19-year history of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Co-Presidents were elected for the 2009-10 academic year. Football student-athlete Blake Lawrence (Lawrence, Kan.) and track and field student-athlete Megan Wheatley (Perth, Australia) will serve as SAAC Co-Presidents in 2009-10. Lawrence and Wheatley assumed presidential responsibilities on Monday, April 27, 2009, replacing 2008-09 President Patrick Burke.

Tyler Hitcher (Track and Field) will serve as SAAC secretary in 2009-10, while Carly Peetz (Soccer) will take a leadership role in community outreach. Adrion Hernandez (Men's Gymnastics) will serve as multi-cultural officer, while Mariah Hutchinson (Swimming and Diving) and Erwin "Smidy" Schmidt (Track and Field) will serve as Big 12 Conference representatives.
