Each year the Tom Heiser Award is given to the Nebraska Student Strength Coach who best demonstrates the ability to persevere and overcome all obstacles in the pursuit of excellence.

The 2003 recipient of the Tom Heiser Award was Nate Thomas.  Nate has been an extremely valuable asset this past year at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.  His passion and drive to be a successful strength and conditioning coach is blatantly obvious.  He sets high standards for his athletes and motivates them to surpass what they believed was not possible.  He accomplishes this by setting an example of how an athlete should not only train, but how they must make intelligent choices concerning their eating and sleeping habits as well as their mental approach to training.

Nate has demonstrated that he is a responsible and committed strength coach.  He is not only dedicated to Husker Power, but he exhibits a tremendous dedication to his athletes. He holds every athlete accountable, regardless what sport they participate in, and he takes time with each individual athlete to set goals and work toward achieving them.

New students at Husker Power have to work hard to gain the respect of the strength coaches.  Nate handled the initiation phase of working at Husker Power with great poise and maturity.  When he encountered conflict, he always took the high road in the way that he conducted himself in those situations.

Nate received his Bachelor of Education with a major in Exercise Science in December.  He has his CSCS and will take the SCCC exam in May.  Nate is currently in charge of the strength programs for Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's Golf and Men's Gymnastics.  He also helps with Men's and Women's Basketball, Swimming and Diving and Wrestling.  In addition to this, Nate has proven himself to be a great leader and assistant at the Performance Camps.

Nate is a very detailed and task oriented person who when given a project to finish, will always complete it sooner than needed and beyond what you ask of him.  If he continues to coach the way he takes care of his Firebird, he'll someday soon be a Division I head strength coach.
