  • 2003 Big 12 Commissioner?s Spring Academic Honor Roll
  • Two-Time Brook Berringer Citizenship Team (2002, 2003)

2003 Outlook
Mike McLaughlin enters the 2003 campaign with hopes of earning playing time at wide receiver. McLaughlin finished spring practice listed fourth at Nebraska?s "Z" receiver position, but has the athleticism to improve his stock during fall camp. McLaughlin posted a team-best time of 3.92 seconds in the pro-agility run during pre-winter testing and owns a 32-inch vertical jump.

McLaughlin was recruited to Nebraska as an option quarterback, but switched to receiver midway through spring drills in 2002. The Millard North graduate has made an impact off the field at Nebraska, twice being named to the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team for his volunteer work.

2002 (Redshirt Freshman)
McLaughlin moved to wingback in the spring and played in four games, but did not have a reception.

2001 (Redshirt)
McLaughlin redshirted and served as a scout-team quarterback.

Before Nebraska (Millard North HS)
McLaughlin succeeded 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch at quarterback in Millard North?s option-oriented offense. McLaughlin was named to the Class A all-state team by the Omaha World-Herald as a quarterback, and a super-state honoree by the Lincoln Journal Star. He was also the Gatorade Nebraska State Player of the Year.

McLaughlin rushed for more than 3,400 yards in his three-year career for Coach Fred Petito, while passing for another 800 yards. He also played some wide receiver, but was the starting quarterback for his final three years. A standout in track, McLaughlin ran a 10.72 100 meters and a 21.7 in the 200 meters. He assisted his 4x400-meter relay team to a state title as a junior and ran on the 4x100-meter team.

Personal
The son of Steve and Gerri McLaughlin, Mike was born on Jan. 27, 1983, in Long Island, N.Y. He is a communication studies major and a two-time Big 12 Commissioner?s Academic Honor Roll selection. McLaughlin?s community involvement includes I?ve Got Heart Week, the Husker Email Literacy Program, "School is Cool", Team Spirit Hospital visits and volunteering at the Omaha Children?s Hospital. His work has made him a two-time selection to the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team, named in honor of the fallen Husker quarterback. McLaughlin wears No. 18 in honor of Berringer.
