Lincoln – Nebraska third baseman Alex Gordon (Lincoln, Neb.) was honored on Wednesday, as he was one of 30 players selected to the Golden Spikes Watch List.

The Golden Spikes Award has been presented annually by USA Baseball since 1978 to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

The 6-1, 215-pounder is hitting .392 on the season and is leading the Huskers in nearly every major offensive category, including homers (11), RBIs (44), hits (40), runs scored (33), walks (23) and on-base percentage (.515). Gordon tops the Big 12 in both on-base percentage (.515) and slugging percentage (.853), is tied for the league lead with 44 RBIs and is second in the conference with 11 round trippers.

Gordon is one of four Big 12 players on the 30-player watch list, joining Texas’ J.P. Howell and Huston Street and Oklahoma State catcher Jason Jaramillo. A complete list is listed on page 2.

The Huskers, who are 23-5 and off to their best start since 1983, return to action this weekend when they play host to Texas Tech at Hawks Field. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. with afternoon games on both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for all three games are available by calling the NU Ticket Office at 800-8-BIG RED or at Hawks Field 90 minutes before each game.
