Lincoln - A pair of Husker freshmen were honored Thursday, as third baseman Alex Gordon (Lincoln, Neb.) and relief pitcher Tim Schoeninger (Denver, Colo.) were selected to Collegiate Baseball?s Freshmen All-America team.
Gordon, a second-team All-Big 12 selection by the Dallas Morning News and the Waco Tribune Herald?s Big 12 freshmen of the Year, finished the 2003 season with a .319 average, seven homers and 48 RBIs in 62 contests. Gordon tied for the team lead with 13 doubles, while also ranking among team leaders in walks (29, second), homers (seven, third), RBIs (48, third) stolen bases (eight, third) and hits 69 (fourth). Last month, Gordon was chosen to the Big 12 All-Tournament team in Oklahoma City, batting .350 with a homer and nine RBIs.
Schoeninger was one of the workhorses of a Husker staff that finished second in the Big 12 with a 3.79 ERA. The right-hander compiled a 4-2 record with six saves in a team-high 25 appearances this spring. He established freshman records for saves and appearances, while striking out 34 batters and issuing just five walks in 46 innings of work. He converted 6-of-7 save situations, including saves against seventh-ranked Texas and No. 22 Texas A&M.
Nebraska finished its 2003 season with a 47-18 record, while winning its second Big 12 regular-season title in three years. The Huskers reached their fifth straight NCAA Regional and is ranked as high as 12th in the national polls.
