Huskers Sign Three Recruits to National Letters-of-Intent

Lincoln - University of Nebraska Baseball Coach Mike Anderson announced the signings of high school pitcher Jon Klausing (Arvada, Colo.) and Michael McDonald (Wichita, Kan.) and junior college transfer Brett Jensen (Eagle Grove, Iowa) to National Letters-of-Intent Thursday.

Both Klausing and McDonald were first-team all-state selections, while Jensen was a first-team junior college All-American this past spring. According to Head Coach Mike Anderson and Associate Head Coach Rob Childress, who serves as NU?s recruiting coordinator, the trio of newcomers, combined with the pitchers signed during the fall, will make the Huskers? staff formidable in the coming seasons.

"We are excited about the potential in this class," Anderson said. "We think that all three of these pitchers can develop under Coach Childress and the environment at Nebraska. It continues our philosophy of recruiting the Midwest, and the University of Nebraska, the support staff and facilities make it easier to recruit the top players in this region."

Klausing was one of the top pitchers in the state of Colorado this spring, going 11-1 with a 1.53 ERA in 87 innings of work at Pomona High School for Coach E.J. Mapps. The 6-foot-7 left-hander struck out 102 hitters and allowed just 57 hits, while tossing 10 complete games in 15 appearances. Klausing, who struck out 10 or more on four occasions, pitched Pomona to a Class 5A state title, firing a complete-game with 10 strikeouts in a 2-1 win over Regis High School in the championship game. The Colorado High School Pitcher of the Year according to the Rocky Mountain News, Klausing was a first-team All-Colorado selection from both of the state's major papers and selected Nebraska over Arizona and Arkansas.

"Jon is a very projectable left-handed pitcher with great size at 6-7, 200 pounds," Childress said. "He knows how to win and brings that competitiveness every time he comes to the mound. Jon is someone who we believe can come in right away and pitch as a freshman."

McDonald earned first-team all-state honors from the Kansas Association of High School Coaches, as he split time between pitching and playing first base for Wichita South High School and Coach Ben Bonous. McDonald, who was also a first-team all-city selection, batted .578 with five homers and 27 RBIs. On the mound, he compiled a 6-2 record with a 2.02 ERA, striking out 54 hitters in 52 innings of work during the spring. McDonald, who graduated with a 3.96 GPA and earned four academic letters, selected Nebraska over Wichita State.

"Michael is a pitcher who we think can develop in our program," Childress said. "He is a left-hander with good size who throws in the mid-80s and comes at you from a three-quarters angle. He also is an excellent student who has a good work ethic."

Jensen comes to Nebraska from Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The 6-foot-7 right-hander helped the Tritons to a 39-18 record and a runner-up finish at the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tenn., earlier this month. He earned first-team NJCAA All-America honors in 2003, going 11-1 with a 2.79 ERA in 80.2 innings this spring. A 45th-round draft pick by the Baltimore Orioles, he had an 85-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while holding foes to a .212 average. As a high school senior at Eagle Grove High School last summer, Jensen went 11-0, pitching his school to the Class 2A state title. He was the recipient of the Bob Feller Award, recognizing the top pitcher in the state of Iowa in each class. He will have three seasons of eligibility at Nebraska.

"Brett had a great season at Iowa Central, leading them to the national tournament as one of their top pitchers," Childress said. "At 6-7, 180 pounds, he has a great pitcher?s frame and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, which makes it tough for hitters to pick up, while having a good knowledge of the strike zone."

Nebraska finished its 2003 season with a 47-18 record, while winning its second Big 12 regular-season title in three years. The Huskers reached their fifth straight NCAA Regional and are ranked as high as 13th in the national polls.
