Prior to the Southern Miss vs. Nebraska Football game, some legendary football tales were being embellished up on the North Stadium Terrace. Over 200 football letterwinners and guests attended a pre-game function allowing Huskers from all eras to re-connect and celebrate the tradition that is Nebraska Football.
Hosted by Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst, letterwinner alums enjoyed visiting with Athletic Director Emeritus and legendary Coach Tom Osborne along with media relations icon Don “Fox” Bryant, Athletic Trainer veteran George Sullivan, offensive line coach Milt Tenopir and other athletic department staff. Dr. Jamie Williams, Football sport administrator and Husker alum joined Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst providing a brief welcome back and vision for the program. Orange Bowl committee member Daryl Robinson was on hand to help salute the 1963 Husker Football team in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Orange Bowl 13-7 victory over Auburn.
Ten members of the team were in attendance and were later honored pre-game during an on-field ceremony. Among those attending the function from the 63 team: James Brown, Dennis Claridge, Ron Griesse, Tony Jeter, Bill Johnson, John Kirby, Preseton Love, Willie Paschell, Lyle Sittler and Larry Tomlinson. Several themes resonated among Husker alums during casual table conversations. Willie Paschell proudly proclaimed, “Bob Devaney and Husker Football shaped me into the person I am today teaching me lifelong values.” Academic All-American Mark Blazek who played in the 80’s credits his pride, passion and commitment to excellence to Nebraska Football. Troy Branch, a linebacker from New Jersey, believes there is no place like Nebraska. “Great people, great resources and a great place to live and raise a family.” Stay tuned for more updates on new N-Club events which will be taking place throughout the fall and spring.
