Pelini Press Conference: Huskers Preach Physical Play
Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini said the Huskers will be searching for a crisp tempo and more physical play when they take on Arkansas State Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Pelini, who guided the Huskers to their 24th straight season-opening win with a 49-3 victory over Florida Atlantic, told the media at Nebraska's weekly press conference on Tuesday that the Husker defense did not play up to their standards against the Owls.
"Things that really need to be fixed are tempo in some areas, in our control of the tempo and really fundamentals," Pelini said. "I wasn't happy about how physical we played as a football team. I don't think we played as physical as we need to play in any regards, front to back. I thought at times you saw some good hits, you saw some physical play. But overall, man-to-man, 11 guys playing it, I thought we played soft at times. We have to get that fixed."
Pelini went on to say that Nebraska's defense was ahead of where it was after one game last season, and that he was pleased with the attitude the Huskers showed in practice on Monday.
"We had light years to go last year, now we just have instead of maybe two galaxies, maybe one galaxy. We might be in the same solar system now," Pelini said. "I can tell you this, there were a lot of guys on our football team who were not happy about how we played. They didn't feel like they played to what they are capable of. I loved the attitude that our players came out with to practice yesterday. They practiced hard and they practiced fast with an attitude, and that needs to continue."
Nebraska and Arkansas State meet at Memorial Stadium Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m., with live pay-per-view coverage from FSN. Arkansas State opened the season with a 61-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State.
Nebraska's media luncheon takes place each Tuesday of game week and features Coach Pelini and several select Husker players. Complete transcripts of Coach Pelini's session with the media will be available throughout the season on Huskers.com, and past weeks can be accessed through the "Game Notes" section on the Football home page.
