Lincoln --- The Nebraska football team went through its first major scrimmage of the spring with a 2 ½ hour workout Saturday. With bright, sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s, the Huskers moved outside to Memorial Stadium for the second straight day, spending two hours in scrimmage situations.
Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said he was pleased with the work the Huskers have been able to get in at this point in the spring. That work included 150 plays in today's scrimmage.
"It was good, just real base. We wanted to block, throw, tackle, run, catch, all those things you want to see in the first scrimmage. It was a good go, a real good go," Watson said.
When asked about individual performances among the quarterbacks, Watson noted that this is not the time to single out individuals, but he said the coaches were pleased with the overall impressions.
"I think all of them did a really good job, they had their moments out there today. I'd say that about all of them. I'd hate to single one out because they're all in the same spot," Watson said. "They're all developing. You see them growing, you see them doing the things I want to see them doing in terms of managing us. So we're getting better at it (but) we have a long way to go."
Watson also noted that that growth can be seen across the board on both sides of the ball, but more so with the younger players.
"We're probably right where we want to be, getting all our installs in. We're seeing execution on film with a bunch of younger players sorting through what a week ago was new, has (now) become familiar," Watson said. "It's just a process. Bo (Pelini) talks about it all the time and it's a process, day after day after day deal and you just have to keep working. The guys have all done a good job and we're proud of all of them."
The Huskers return to practice on Monday, April 5 for the eighth spring practice leading up to the April 17 Red-White Spring Game. Tickets still remain for the spring contest and fans can purchase reserved seats at Huskers.com.
