David and Martinez Earn Weekly Honors

Following Nebraska’s impressive 48-13 road win at Kansas State last Thursday, quarterback Taylor Martinez and linebacker Lavonte David were both honored for their performances by the local and national media on Monday.

Martinez, a redshirt freshman from Corona, Calif., was named the Big 12’s Offensive Player of the Week and Rivals.com selected him as its national freshman of the week for the third time this season. Martinez accounted for 369 yards of total offense and five touchdowns while breaking a pair of school records at Kansas State. Martinez carried the ball 15 times for 241 yards, breaking the Nebraska quarterback rushing record and posting the eighth-best rushing performance in school history and the best since 1991.

Martinez also went 5-of-7 through the air for 128 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown pass. His 369 yards of total offense were a Nebraska freshman record, as he became the first Husker freshman to post 300 yards of offense in a game. His four rushing touchdowns tied the NU freshman record while his five total touchdowns were the most ever by a Husker freshman.

On the defensive side of the ball, David posted an impressive performance for the second straight game. After totaling 19 tackles against South Dakota State, David registered 16 tackles, including 10 solo stops, against Kansas State. A junior from Miami, Fla., David also added one sack and recorded two tackles-for-loss.

Nebraska took home both the Big 12 offensive and defensive player-of-the-week honors for only the third time ever. The previous two times came when Eric Crouch and Mike Brown swept the awards in back-to-back weeks during the 1999 season (Texas A&M on Nov. 8 and Kansas State on Nov. 15).

The performances of Martinez, David and the rest of the team helped Nebraska rise to fourth in the USA Today/Coaches poll, released on Sunday. The Huskers, who have won six straight Big 12 games, will look to remain unbeaten this season when they host the Texas Longhorns on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised regionally on ABC and may also be available nationally on ESPN2 (check local listings).
