Huskers Open Spring Drills
"I thought it was a good day, good tempo," Head Coach Bo Pelini said. "We got a lot done. There were some new things, there were a couple drills to start that were a little bit of a Chinese fire drill. Overall, I thought it was a really good day. We got a lot of work done, I thought the effort was great and I thought we hit the ground running."
Even with the addition of new coaches to the Husker staff, Pelini said that the team practiced well and that there was little inconsistency in the flow of the practice.
"Practice is practice," Pelini said. "We spent a lot of time talking about what the schedule would be like. It was pretty smooth. There were some new things obviously on both sides of the football. We were fairly basic for the first day and I thought the execution was pretty good."
The goal of spring practice for the Huskers remains consistent, laying a foundation of knowledge for the players to build off of throughout the spring, into the summer and through fall camp.
"We have a lot to accomplish," Pelini said. "We want to spend our time laying a really solid foundation going into the fall. Today was a first step to that. I thought there were a lot of good things. Believe me, we have a lot of work to do, we have a long ways to go."
Pelini talked briefly about the schedule of the Husker spring practices. The team will practice next Monday and Wednesday before taking a week off for Spring Break. Practices will begin again on March 28. The scheduled break will give Pelini and his staff a chance to evaluate how the players are coming along.
"Same thing, I want attention to detail," Pelini said. "I want to lay that foundation, get the basics in. It will be a pretty aggressive install for the first three days and then we'll come back after the break. I kind of like that. It will give the staff a chance to evaluate it and see where we are. We'll come back the following Monday and will review it and the installment will keep going on in the next week. I think of where we are and what we need to accomplish, I kind of like the way it's going so far."
Nebraska will continue with its 15 allotted spring workouts on Monday afternoon. Tickets for the spring game remain available on Huskers.com and through the Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-8 BIG RED.
