Huskers Kick Off Spring Practice
After practice, head coach Bo Pelini addressed the media about the first day of practice saying that it was productive as he liked the team's tempo during the day's drills.
"I thought it was good. I liked our tempo," Pelini said. "We got a lot done today. Obviously, in shorts and helmets, we got a lot accomplished. I thought we had a crisp tempo, and we got a lot of guys reps. It was a good day, very productive for us."
Pelini also talked about the quarterbacks Taylor Martinez and Brion Carnes, saying that their hard work they put in in the offseason is showing already.
"I thought it was night and day today," Pelini said when discussing Martinez's mechanics. "Every time he comes out here from this offseason, even the bowl game, he's just that much more comfortable. I thought he had a good day. I thought Brion did some good things out there. He looks a lot more comfortable out there. I think they put some work in here in the offseason on their own and it's helped them. It's paid off."
Pelini continued saying that Martinez is throwing the ball well while still making adjustments in his mechanics.
"He threw the ball well. He did it while working on some of the mechanical things we've been talking about working on and he was still able to be very productive," Pelini said.
The New England Patriots three-time Super Bowl Champion Head Coach Bill Belichick was a guest speaker on Friday night at the coaches clinic and talked with hundreds of high school football coaches for over an hour. With Belichick in town yesterday, Pelini said that he thought the time they spent together was productive for both of them.
"I thought it was great. Having Coach Belichick here, not only for our team, but for our coaching staff," Pelini said. "I think we share a lot of the same things philosophically about what it takes to put a team together. I thought he gave a great talk to the high school guys last night. He's probably the best in the business, and he took time out of his schedule to come. He was also able to get some out of it for himself as far as watching some good tape of our guys coming out (into the NFL). He came out and worked out a couple of our guys. I think it was a win-win. I really appreciated him coming and being a part of the clinic."
The Huskers will be back on the practice field on Monday and Wednesday next week before taking a 12-day break for Spring Break. Continue to check back to Huskers.com throughout the spring for all your spring football updates.
