Huskers Conclude Week with Scrimmage

LINCOLN - The Nebraska football team wrapped up its second week of spring practice on Saturday as the Huskers practiced and scrimmaged for just over two hours outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass Grass Practice Fields. The Huskers were in full pads.

After running about 100 plays in the scrimmage, Nebraska's head coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media about today's workout.

"We had a good go today. We had a good week," Pelini said. "We scrimmaged for a couple periods on Wednesday and had a little bit of a shorter practice yesterday and had about half and half practice and scrimmage today. It's been a good week. The guys are progressing. Things are going well."

When asked if anything stood out, Pelini said he'd have to check the film, but thought the energy of the team was good.

"I thought some guys showed up. I thought the tempo was really good," Pelini said. "They played hard. There was some mental mistakes made that were disappointing, but overall it was a pretty good practice."

Pelini was asked about the play of the quarterbacks in the scrimmage and said that both were impressive.

"We didn't scrimmage Taylor [Martinez] for a really long time, but he was very, very sharp out there today. I thought Brion [Carnes] did some good things. I thought our young running backs did some good things. I thought across the board it was a pretty good go."

Nebraska didn't have running back Rex Burkhead participate in the scrimmage so they could get a look at the younger backs in Ameer Abdullah and Aaron Green, and Pelini came away impressed by what the two showed.

"Those two guys were thrown into the fire pretty quick. They're young backs that have a lot of talent. Aaron Green ran tough today. He ran hard. Those guys are good backs. They're coming and I'm liking their progress," Pelini said.

Pelini commented on the secondary saying they're much further along at this point now than they were last year.

"Our secondary, I think, night and day from this point to where we were last year. There's a lot of good competition going on there. Our guys are developing. I feel really good about our secondary," Pelini said.

The Huskers have two full weeks of practice remaining before their annual Red-White spring game on April 14. Tickets are still available for the spring game and can be purchased on Huskers.com
