Huskers Focus on Physical Play in Spring Practice

Lincoln - Head Coach Bo Pelini and the Huskers began their second full week of spring practice with a 2-hour full-padded session on Monday afternoon inside the Hawks Championship Center.

Pelini noted that he is looking for the team to remain sharp as spring practices continue and as they reach pivotal points of the team's progression.

"You come off a scrimmage and I just thought our attention to detail wasn't quite as good," Pelini said. "I thought we made some errors that I don't think we should be making at this point. The effort is there and the want-to is there, now we just have to put our heads inside of it and keep progressing."

The Huskers held their first major scrimmage of the spring last Saturday, which included 150 plays. The coaches have noticed improvement across the board, but are still looking for growth after watching the scrimmage tape.

"It's more about effort, about tackling, about the physicality of things," Pelini said. "I thought we did some good things, I thought some guys showed up, not much different than my evaluation of a practice, which it should be at this point of the year. We have a long way to go on both sides of the football but that is to be expected."

With experienced cornerbacks Alfonzo Dennard and Prince Amukamara returning to NU's defensive squad, Pelini said that the biggest focus is on polishing fundamentals and maintaining a high level of physical play.

"I want them competing and challenging routes and things like that," Pelini said. "I also want attention to detail in what we're asking them to do, how we're asking them to do it and working on the fine points. At the end of the day, I think that is what we're looking for across the board, making progress in that area."

The Huskers return to the field Wednesday afternoon for their ninth of 14 spring practices leading up to the April 17 Red-White Spring Game. Less than 15,000 tickets remain, which can be purchased by visiting Huskers.com or by calling 1-800-8BIG-RED.
