The Walter Camp Award goes to the nation's most outstanding college football player. While no single person can claim credit for the innovation of football, no one contributed more to the game's development than Walter Camp. Through Camp's many innovations, football changed from a rugby-like game into a unique sport. He is credited with the play from scrimmage, the numerical assessment of goals and tries, the restriction of play to eleven men per side, set plays, and strategy features which have led to the development of the fast, interesting, and organized game which we enjoy so much today. Camp was also one of the first football coaches, compiling a 79-5-2 record at Yale and Stanford, and was considered the game's authority, electing an annual All-America team since 1906. The Walter Camp Player of the Year Award has been presented annually since 1967.
