The Nebraska football team practiced for the first time in San Antonio on Wednesday as it continued preparations for the Dec. 29 Alamo Bowl matchup with Michigan State at the Alamodome.

The Huskers worked out for about 1 hours in half-pads on the grass field at Trinity University. Assistant Head Coach Turner Gill said the practice site is outstanding for a bowl game.

“The practice facilities are very, very good,” Gill said. “This is a great facility. It will definitely be good for us being on the grass. They have the sport-turf in the dome, but this shouldn’t be that much different as we prepare for the game.”

Gill said the Huskers were a little “sluggish” during the late-morning workout, and the coaching staff will expect a better effort during Thursday afternoon’s practice.

“They were not in tune with everything we wanted to do today,” Gill said. “Tomorrow we definitely hope they will come out here and get some things done at a better pace and a little bit more efficiently.”

The players and the staff are looking forward to the Alamo Bowl, according to Gill, a native of Fort Worth, Texas. The matchup with a quality opponent from an outstanding conference adds excitement to the Huskers’ bowl trip.

“They are a great opponent,” Gill said. “Any time you have a matchup between the Big 12 and the Big Ten it is always going to be great teams playing each other and I’m just happy to have the opportunity to coach in the game. With it being in Texas, it is close to home for me, but we are down here for business and a football game.”

The Huskers had the remainder of the afternoon off on Wednesday. Nebraska is scheduled for an early afternoon practice on Christmas Day at Trinity University, followed by Christmas dinner for the entire travel party at the team headquarters at San Antonio’s Hyatt Regency.
