Columbus, Ohio- The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team (9-2, 1-1) took down the No. 23 Ohio State Buckeyes 3-1 (17-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-14) Saturday at St. John Arena on the campus on Ohio State University. With the win, the Huskers evened their Big Ten record to 1-1.
Morgan Broekhuis led the Huskers on the night with 12 kills for a .370 hitting percentage. Gina Mancuso tallied 10 kills (.304), while Hannah Werth had eight kills and 10 digs. Lauren Cook notched 35 assists and Meghan Haggerty led the team with six total blocks.
The Huskers hit .291 for the match, while Ohio State hit just .048. Nebraska posted 47 team kills to OSU's 42.
Nebraska opened the first set, taking a 6-3 lead on a block by Werth. Ohio State tied the set at 10-10 and posted three consecutive points to lead 13-10 before NU had to use a timeout. The Huskers closed the gap at 15-13 on a kill by Hayley Thramer, but OSU went ahead 19-14 after a hitting error by the Huskers. Werth and Broekhuis connected, cutting the Buckeye lead to 19-16, but it would not be enough as a four-point run would result in Ohio State taking the first set 25-17.
In the first set, Broekhuis led the Huskers with five kills, while Werth and Haggerty both had two each. Cook notched nine assists, but the Huskers hit just .152 in the set. Ohio State notched a .273 hitting percentage for the set. NU was out-dug 16-12 in the set.
In the second set the Huskers took a 5-3 lead after Broekhuis notched a kill. Thramer and Cook teamed up for a block, giving Nebraska an 8-5 advantage, while a kill from Thramer made it 11-7, Huskers. A double-stuff block by Werth and Haggerty gave NU a 16-10 lead, as a few Ohio State hitting errors stretched Nebraska's lead to 23-12. Mancuso sealed the second-set victory with a kill and a final score of 25-12.
Mancuso led the Huskers in the second set with four kills. The Huskers recorded a .340 hitting percentage in the set, while Ohio State hit -.105. NU had five team blocks, while the Buckeyes recorded just one team block.
Thramer opened the third set with back-to-back kills, while the Huskers went on to take an 11-4 lead as Ohio State called a timeout. Ohio State strung together a run to cut the Husker lead to 16-13 before NU had to use a timeout. A kill by Mancuso made it 21-16, Huskers, and NU went on to take the third set 25-20.
NU had 12 team kills in the third set, recording a .258 hitting percentage. Ohio State held a .073 hitting percentage in the set, while NU out-blocked the Buckeyes 3-0 in the set.
In the fourth set, Nebraska jumped out to a 3-1 lead on a kill by Thramer. Ohio State came back to tie the set at 4-4, but Haggerty and Cook teamed up for a block to make it 6-4, Huskers. Back-to-back kills from Broekhuis made it 16-10, Nebraska, as Ohio State used another timeout. Three consecutive errors by Ohio State and a kill by Werth put NU up 21-10. Nebraska would easily take the fourth set 25-14, sealing the 4-1 victory.
Nebraska took the fourth set behind 15 team kills and .467 hitting percentage. Ohio State had just nine team kills and a -.029 team hitting percentage.
The Huskers return to action on Wednesday as they host the Michigan State Spartans at the NU Coliseum at 7 p.m. The match will air live on the Big Ten Network.
