Lincoln - Five Nebraska basketball players were honored for their performance in the classroom Wednesday, as they were named to the Academic All-Conference team by the Big Ten Conference.

The group was led by junior forward Brandon Ubel, who earned academic all-conference recognition for the second straight year. Ubel was a first-team academic All-Big 12 pick in 2010-11.  Joining Ubel as academic all-conference picks were Mike Fox, Kye Kurkowski, Trevor Menke and Christopher Niemann, as all four players were honored for the first time in their career. Nebraska's five selections tied for third in the league, as only Indiana and Purdue, with seven selections apiece, had most all-conference honorees in 2011-12.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Wednesday's announcement included Academic All-Big Ten honorees from men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's gymnastics and wrestling.
